is the carmel marathon hard?

By marathon standards, no. The Carmel Marathon is one of the flattest and fastest spring courses in the Midwest, with roughly 140 feet between the high and low points of the course and a PR Score of 99 out of 100. Over 21% of finishers ran Boston qualifying times in 2024. This is a race designed for speed, and the terrain cooperates.

But "flat" deserves some unpacking, because the Carmel Marathon is not pancake-flat in the way that Chicago is. Runners who show up expecting zero elevation change are consistently surprised. The course has a series of gentle, rolling hills that never exceed a few percent grade individually but are almost always present. One experienced runner put it well: "Don't believe the 'flat' and train for the hills." The first half trends slightly downhill, which feels effortless at the time and deceptive in retrospect. The second half, particularly miles 16 through 22, trends slightly uphill, and on tired legs at mile 18, a 1% grade that you'd never notice at mile 3 can feel like a wall that goes on forever.

The other difficulty factor is the weather. Carmel in mid-April averages highs around 56°F and lows around 37°F, which is close to ideal for distance running. But Indiana spring weather is unpredictable. Some years have been windy enough to shut down post-race concessions (2018). Others have featured heavy, steady rain from start to finish. And on the occasional warm year, the second half of the course has limited shade on the road sections, which compounds the slight uphill trend.

The honest assessment: this is a 2 out of 5 difficulty course. It is easier than most marathons in the country. The terrain is forgiving, the logistics are simple, the aid stations are frequent, and the course is designed to let you run your pace. That's exactly why people come here. It's not a course that will beat you up. It's a course that lets your training speak.
