The Zeigler Kalamazoo Marathon starts and finishes at Bronson Park in downtown Kalamazoo and loops through the city's diverse neighborhoods, trails, parks, and the Western Michigan University campus. It's a course that changes character every few miles.
The Start (Bronson Park, Downtown). You line up in the heart of downtown Kalamazoo's historic park. The combined field of marathon, half, relay, 10K, and 5K runners creates early energy. The course heads out through downtown streets.
Early Miles (Winchell Neighborhood and Parks). The course winds into the Winchell neighborhood, one of Kalamazoo's tree-lined residential areas. The rolling hills begin here. Residents come out to their porches and front yards with signs, music, and cowbells. The community support through the neighborhoods is the race's strongest asset.
Mid-Race (WMU Campus and Waldo Stadium). The course takes you through Western Michigan University's campus and through Waldo Stadium. The student energy and stadium acoustics provide a mid-race boost. This section is shared with the half marathon and 10K fields.
The South Loop (Stryker Campus, Edison, Milwood). The marathon-only miles head south through the Stryker corporate campus, the Edison and Milwood neighborhoods, and along portions of the trail system. This is where the field thins and the course gets quieter. The rolling terrain continues.
Portage Creek Bicentennial Park Trail. The trail section provides a change of surface and scenery: paved path through parkland along the creek. It's flatter and more sheltered than the road sections, and it's a welcome reprieve in the back half of the race.
The Return to Downtown. The course winds back through neighborhoods and approaches Bronson Park for the finish. The final stretch includes a noticeable uphill that multiple runners have flagged as the last surprise on a course that never quite lets you forget it has hills.
The Finish (Bronson Park). You finish back where you started, in the downtown park. The Finish Line Celebration includes food, beer, and the post-race community gathering. The whole race weekend is contained within walking distance.
